
The owners did not want their wine collection hidden behind a basement door. They wanted it to belong to the part of the house where people gather.
The Harbor Beach residence was being rebuilt around a generous lower-level entertaining space with a bar, pool table, theater area and enclosed gym. That timing gave Kristen Staite and the Origin Wine Cellars team the opportunity to design the cellar before the walls and mechanical systems were fixed.
The resulting room is long, narrow and highly visible. Glass keeps the collection connected to the surrounding space. Inside, two organized walls of bottles create a clear central passage and draw the eye toward an illuminated stone feature at the far end.
This is a modern glass wine cellar designed around use, not spectacle alone. It gives the collection serious capacity and stable storage conditions while making choosing a bottle part of the evening.

Planning the wine cellar with the house
The best time to solve a technically demanding wine cellar is before construction decisions close off the best options. Because Origin became involved during the rebuild, the team could coordinate framing, insulation, electrical service, lighting, refrigeration lines and wall preparation with the wider basement plan.
That early involvement also made it possible to relate the wine cellar to the adjacent gym. Both rooms use black-framed glass, giving the lower level a consistent architectural language rather than a collection of unrelated enclosures.
The cellar announces itself as soon as someone enters the entertaining area, but it does not behave like a wall. Views continue through the glass, reflected light extends the apparent width of the room and the slim framework repeats the dark detailing elsewhere in the home.

A contemporary cellar for a Harbor Beach home
From the street, the residence is defined by clean horizontal lines, pale exterior cladding, dark-framed windows and carefully controlled landscaping. The wine cellar needed to feel like an interior continuation of that architecture.
Heavy traditional cabinetry would have made the narrow room feel smaller and disconnected from the home. Instead, the cellar uses transparent glass, slender metal supports, pale white oak accents and a restrained palette of warm stone and black framing.
The composition is contemporary, but it is not cold. White oak softens the metal racking. Warm integrated lighting reveals the bottles and stone surfaces. A low cabinet provides concealed storage and a useful surface without interrupting the long sightline through the room.
Harbor Beach is known for waterfront homes designed around entertaining, privacy and indoor-outdoor living. This project responds to that setting without relying on generic coastal decoration. Its connection to Fort Lauderdale comes through the way it supports the house: open, social and carefully engineered for South Florida conditions.

Custom racking that shows every label
The racking combines slim metal rods with white oak supports attached to vertical stainless-steel posts. Bottles rest horizontally with labels visible from the central passage. Along the glass wall, the arrangement can also be read from outside the cellar, allowing the collection to contribute to the surrounding entertainment space.
That visibility is more than decorative. Label-forward storage makes it easier to scan the collection, compare bottles and choose a wine without moving several others first. Repetition brings order to a room holding approximately 1,500 bottles, while illuminated stone niches interrupt the long runs of storage and create places for featured selections.
Sometimes the smallest detail changes the entire character of a wine cellar. Here, a slim line of concealed floor lighting beneath the custom white oak drawer cabinet creates a soft floating effect, draws attention to the stone floor and adds warmth without competing with the wine display. It is a subtle addition, but it gives the cabinetry greater definition and makes the whole space feel more polished.
Custom drawers beneath the display provide space for accessories and the owners' cork collection. Every element earns its position: high-capacity storage, clear organization, selected moments of display and an uncluttered walking route through the center.

Insulated glass for a demanding climate
In Fort Lauderdale, the glass enclosure and the refrigeration system have to be designed together.
Ordinary interior glass can allow too much heat transfer and create surfaces where condensation becomes visible. This cellar uses insulated dual-pane tempered glass with thermally broken framing to help separate the cool interior from the warmer surrounding space.
The black frame and mullion pattern give the enclosure definition, but their performance is equally important. The door closes against carefully detailed seals, including a sweep at the bottom, so the refrigeration system is not continuously fighting warm, humid air leaking into the room.
The target cellar temperature is approximately 55°F. Maintaining it consistently depends on the entire enclosure: glass, framing, door, insulation, vapor control, lighting load and refrigeration. No single component can compensate for careless work elsewhere.

Why a water-cooled split system was the right answer
The basement location created a practical problem. There was no suitable adjacent space where a conventional through-wall unit could safely reject the cellar's heat, and placing noisy equipment in the entertainment area would undermine the design.
Origin specified a water-cooled, ducted split system from US Cellar Systems. The configuration uses water to carry heat away from the refrigeration equipment, while discreet ductwork supplies conditioned air to the cellar. Major equipment remains outside the visible room.
This is the hardworking mechanical side of a beautiful wine cellar. The industrial metal enclosure is not designed to be admired, but to deliver reliable, high-quality climate control. US Cellar Systems’ high-static equipment can be positioned away from the cellar and connected through supply and return ductwork, keeping bulky machinery and much of its operating noise out of sight. The homeowners experience a quiet, elegant wine room, while the less attractive equipment does its essential work behind the scenes.
The result is what good mechanical design should produce: stable conditions for the wine, no bulky cooling unit interrupting the racking and less mechanical noise where the family entertains. The engineering is substantial, but the experience of the room remains calm.

Why the finished cellar works
This Fort Lauderdale wine cellar succeeds because the architectural and technical decisions support the same goal. Glass connects the collection to the entertaining space. The long passage makes a substantial room easy to navigate. White oak adds warmth to the precision of the metal racking. Label-forward storage makes 1,500 bottles feel organized rather than overwhelming.
